What's to be done with the migrants at Calais in the short-medium term?
It can't be claimed these people are seeking asylum as they are already in a safe country, and it's telling that they are willing to risk life and limb to leave Socialist France for Conservative Britain, but the situation can't really be left to continue as is indefinitely. So what's to be done?
Open up our borders to everyone everywhere without prejudice? Send in the army to clear the area and physically take them back to their country of origin? Just let it continue in limbo as is?
I say short-medium term as things like changing our foreign policy and military interventions around the world that may be the root cause of this won't help the current batch of people living in a desperate situation in the camp just outside the ferry port. I'm looking for practical, implementable solutions.
As an aside, does anyone else think the haulage firms need to do a much better job of securing their lorries? Given that they're acutely aware of the problem, from the video footage it still seems very, very easy to just open the back door of a lorry and jump in.
Hmmm, interesting...
