Repetitive Strain Injury/employment advice needed
EXPOSITION: have had RSI in my hands/arms on and off for around a year. It started in a data entry temp job I'd had for 6 months last April, where I used a PC all day at work and then a laptop for a few hours at home (most friends live far away so I need it to keep in touch, plus writing is my main hobby). It completely crippled me, I had to sellotape all my fingers together in order to type at work because my hands were in so much pain. Had to take some time off eventually, but after about a month of time off/taking it slower, I could type normally though my arms still felt a bit weak. I (mostly) didn't work between Sept and Feb, but it came back badly in early March after I'd only been using the computer in my new temp job for 2 weeks. Was able to do some non-computery work for a bit but was released not long after.
I haven't had a computer-using job for 2 months (and didn't use a PC at all for 3 weeks while travelling) but my arms still ache a bit after using a PC for half an hour or so, and very badly after a few hours. So I have no idea what to do employment-wise - while I am still able to use a PC, I have the luxury of walking away from it at home when my arms begin to hurt, in a way I couldn't in a job. My only employable skill is writing. I have never even considered any job that does not in some way involve a computer/writing. I'm disastrous at manual labour and I can't drive. What the fuck do I do?? Was planning to do more temping but going to my agency with all these limitations just feels futile. I'm none the wiser if I look for a permanent job. Keep being hassled by my family to get work too so I feel completely useless and shit.
Has anyone else had RSI and had to adapt? I don't want to be mopey and useless but this has basically messed with every career plan I've ever considered and it totally overwhelms me :/
