A guy on a tram yesterday got angry with me because I don't speak Finnish, or any other language. (I know a bit of basic French but my pronunciation is horrific.) He was ranting about how English speakers don't need to bother learning other languages because everyone is learning English. He has a point but is it worth him getting butthurt over this? Surely a world lingua franca is useful in an increasingly globalised world?
