Help, what do I do?

For the last week I've heard noises that are definitely animal like. I thought at first a bird might've fallen into the chimney shaft so I ignored it. I live in a top floor flat and have access to the lift space. It's definitely birds, rats or squirrels. I'm about to go away for a week, what's the worst that could happen?
