So, yeah, everyone says it's bad.

And my limited research into the subject says that cracking open the planet to access all the gooey stuff in the middle probably isn't a great idea, but is it an entirely bad thing?

Or can it be done safely with minimal (or rather no) long term impact?

Anyone care to explain to the layman?
