Are opticians scamming us all?
Just had an eye test and ordered some new glasses. BOGOF on the frames and lenses, which is great, though £85 for some plastic frames seems a bit steep in the first instance, so at this stage I'm satisfied with £85 for two pairs and £25 for the test.
But hang on, now I'm going to get some sales treatment:
Specsavers Woman: "They have recommended thinning on the lenses" (they?) "which normally costs £98 per pair but we can do you for £60 per pair, and comes with free anti glare coating" etc etc.
Smee: "Can you show me how different they will be if I do or don't get the thinning?"
SW: *flashes crappy picture, not to scale* "yeah it will be significant with your prescription"
S: "do you have any actual lenses I can see to compare?"
SW: "no"
S: "can you tell if the lenses in my current glasses have been thinned?"
SW: "no"
S: "no thanks then"
SW: "ok, here's the tint we're recommending on your sunglasses [I'm getting the free pair as shades] and here's the tint that comes free" *shines massive reflecty bit of metal in face, but only for the free option*
S: Fuck off and die.
Also, they have these TVs with adverts on for designer glasses, and all the adverts feature attractive models kissing each other, walking on the beach, lounging seductively etc... not wearing glasses - but the glasses they're advertising kind of hover about on a split screen next to them. Ridiculous.
