Book wankers: pick a current favourite writer and write a short blurb about them.
I've recently become a bit obsessed with Kobo Abe, the "Japanese Kafka", but have nearly exhausted all of his works and need some ideas about where to go next.
Abe inhabits the same space as a lot of existential types, Kafka, Beckett, et al. but with a particularly Japanese bent. Sometimes they're quite linear and digestible (Woman in the Dunes, The Ark Sakura) but others are really surreal and labyrinthine, and can be a total mindfuck (The Box Man, Secret Rendezvous, most of them actually). His protagonists are always disassociated nobodies traversing landscapes they don't understand, just meat being shovelled into the grave basically. Just my cup of tea.
Don't be all 'ooh i can't decide' and list 12 people like a bunch of absolute DiSers though, please and thanks.
