The film Starred Up
features some very strong central performances marooned in a pretty straightforward Brit prison drama. Kept it pretty low key but still lapsed in to cliche for 80% of its running time and pretty much everything was familiar from 1990s gritty TV dramas, from the 'bent screws' right up to the greasy top dog prisoner running things from his cell. He even plays chess and has asthma in lieu of being an actual character. Jack O'Connell is very, very good though. And Ben Mendelsohn is convincingly weird and dangerous. But creative trailer editing made it all look more intriguing and stylish than it ended up being.
Also the audience I watched it with last night found everything inexplicably hilarious, including pretty much the whole audience laughing out loud at a story of a paedophile being brutally disfigured. Then a group of cinema patrons posed for photos of each other during the end credits. Britain is fucking weird.
Overall, probably wouldn't bother until it's on Film4/10
