NFL WEEK 16: GOODBYE CANDLESTICK EDITION
So there's only TWO (!) weeks left of the regular season and with it some absolutely massive games, let's right into it:
6PM, SKY SPORTS
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (10-4) @ CAROLINA PANTHERS (10-4)
Huge, huge game atop the NFC South today after yours truly expertly predicted than New Orleans would fall to St. Louis away. As a result, Carolina must be feeling good going into this game, knowing that a strong defence at home is all it takes to shake the Saints, and that is exactly what they have. A Panthers win would be a huge statement here, not only meaning they take control of the NFC South but also potentially the number 2 seed, giving them home advantage when these two inevitably meet in the playoffs. The Saints, for all their strong work at home and having one of the best QBs in the game, just can't deal with an defensive stand away from home. Seattle and St. Louis both stuffed them, and Carolina have more than enough talent to do the same, so one can only assume... oh and by the way, thunderstorm is forecast meaning muddy conditions which the Panthers will benefit hugely from. (CAR by 4-5)
9:25PM, SKY SPORTS
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (10-4) @ BALTIMORE RAVENS (8-6)
It's a good job I'm neutral to that first game, because this one will have me in pieces. Except, I am pretty confident going into this one. The away win to Detroit was a huge season saving effort from Justin Tucker and the D, with the momentum thoroughly going through Baltimore in December once again. Now they face an on paper very tough challenge, but the Patriots are hugely depleted without Gronk, Mayo or Wilfork, and as Miami showed last week (heaping extra pressure onto this game) Brady can't do it all. Add this to the fact that Baltimore have a strong record against Brady, particularly when at home and with how they've been playing recently, and I feel Baltimore have a great chance. Incidentally, this is just as big a game for the Patriots after last week's result; if Miami win out and the Pats lose out, Miami take the division. Alright, it's unlikely they lose to Buffalo at home in the season finale, but they would still probably rather have this wrapped up. (BAL by 3)
1:30AM, CHANNEL 4
CHICAGO BEARS (8-6) @ PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (8-6)
NBC decided to flex this from the NE/BAL game for some reason, and though it should be a fun one I'd argue (biasedly) that the former is a bigger game. Anyway, this should still be a fun one, with the two teams currently benefiting from the Division leader rule and thus sitting in the 4th and 3rd seeds respectively (while the much better Arizona Cardinals look destined to miss out). These two currently sit atop two very hilariously under-performing divisions, mostly by virtue of not being Detroit or Dallas. It should also be a pretty close battle, though expect a hell of a lot of running from Forte and McCoy. Should be a fun shoot-out, essentially looking like a college match with the lack of defence, shame that McCloin has been taken back to the bench, or this would have been an intriguing match up of the great backup QBs. MONDAY, 1:40AM EUROSPORT
ATLANTA FALCONS (4-10) @ SAN FRANCISCO (10-4)
There probably could have been better games to see one of the greatest, most historic stadiums in football off, but to be fair on the schedulers, they probably thought this would have meant something come week 16. As it stands, the home fans should get to see off their wonderful Candlestick Park with a fairly comfortable win as they head to the playoffs on the road (SF by 7)
THE REST:
MIAMI DOLPHINS (8-6) @ BUFFALO BILLS (5-9) - Yeah yeah yeah, Miami have the easiest road to the AFC wildcard, blah blah blah (MIA BY 7)
MINNESOTA VIKINGS (4-9-1) @ CINCINNATI BENGALS (9-5) - Imagine if Cincy lost this game... I mean, they won't but it would be funny. (CIN by 4-5)
DENVER BRONCOS (11-3) @ HOUSTON TEXANS (2-12) - Easy Win Houston here... (DEN by 7+)
TENNESSEE TITANS (5-9) @ JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (4-10) - oh god who cares. Would be quite nice for Jacksonville not to be bottom of the divi... oh yeah, Houston. (JAX by 3)
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (9-5) @ KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (11-3) - SNOW WATCH! This is the game most likely to be a snow bowl. It's also a game between two playoff bound teams locked into their respective 4th and 5th seeds and therefore without much to play for. Maybe time to start resting guys in a potentially ugly one. (KC by 3)
CLEVELAND BROWNS (4-10) @ NEW YORK JETS (6-8) - Let's be honest, this will probably be pretty hilarious. (CLE by 3)
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (4-10) @ ST LOUIS RAMS (6-8) - Great win for a team with nothing to play for but plenty to build on in St. Louis last week, expect it to continue as they remain dignified in the ultra competitive NFC West (STL by 4-5)
DALLAS COWBOYS (7-7) @ WASHINGTON REDSKINS (3-11) - How great would it be if Washington trolled Dallas (even though Dallas are perfectly capable of trolling themselves). Washington are such a mess though, it's hard to see if they've even win again as long as they're called the Redskins. (DAL by 4-5)
LATES:
NEW YORK GIANTS (5-9) @ DETROIT LIONS (7-7) - oh Detroit, yet again you had it in your grasp and ended up spunking it up against the wall (Baltimore D-Line) and now you sit 3rd in your division. They'll win today, but it's almost certainly too late barring complete collapses from BOTH Chicago and Green Bay. (DET by 4-5)
ARIZONA CARDINALS (9-5) @ SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (12-2) - Poor Arizona, they've been comfortably better than Chicago this year and though they were beaten by Philly have been far more consistent. If they're to get into the playoffs, they must win out, and although an already Playoff bound Seattle has some advantages, they're still to wrap up the division and homefield at that stadium they generally don't lose in. Which by the way, they'll be in today. Sorry 'Zona, you've been real fun to watch this year. (SEA by 4-5)
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (6-8) @ GREEN BAY PACKERS (7-6-1) - What a comeback performance by Matt Flynn last week. Alright, it was against the self-imploding Cowboys, but away from home and in a deep hole at half time, it was a really impressive victory for the richest back up in sports. He's earned the start again today, which isn't a terrible decision given he may still be able to get them into the playoffs (or at the very least, into the probable playoff game with Chicago next week) buying time for a fully fit Rodgers to take over in the playoffs. The Steelers aren't completely done as Smyth keeps reminding us, but they'd have to have a terrific turn of events to make it at this stage. So chances are, Eddie Lacy will tear it up in the 20 degree Snow of the frozen tundra, Wisconsin. (GB by 4-5)
OAKLAND RAIDERS (4-10) @ SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (7-7) - Oh San Diego, you perennial consistently inconsistent underachievers. Phillip Rivers has had a heckuva comeback year, but to what end? To lead them to essentially the place they have more or less his entire career (8-8 and just missing out on the wildcard). They certainly have more chance than Pittsburgh but. (SD by 7)
And that's us on the penultimate day of the season. Some massive games, what are we all looking forward to? GO.
