I heard this on a programme about Alan Whicker and didn't really thin it coul be true but I've just looked it up and lo and behold it is a true fact:

For a period in the 1950s, no television was broadcast between the hours of 6pm and 7pm to enable parents to trick young children into thinking the evenings television was over to make it easier to get them to sleep.
