In my last few jobs I've either been in places that had a set training/promotion structure linked to pay, or have had a pay freeze on (or both!). For the first time, I'm somewhere where I'm now in a position where if I want mo' cash, I need to ask for it.

I've been here a year now, and just had a positive assessment (with the usual points for improvement), and the person who gave that said I'd have to ask her boss about a rise (it's a small company, no HR team or anything). I'm planning to email the boss asking to chat about it, but I have no idea how the process works - should I be requesting a certain percentage raise, expecting him to offer me one, negotiating on it?
