I just watched Inland Empire for the third time and I feel like starting a thread about it
This thread's like Ronseal. Har har.
Anyway yeah, watching it for the third time -- it's still a right old mindflip, but the pieces are starting to come together, and I definitely finished watching with a higher opinion of the film than I've had the other times I've watched it for a number of reasons.
Narrative threads feel like they're untangling in a way and forming a more coherent whole in my head and the theories and ideas that spring in my head while watching don't so much get smacked down by some new scene; I feel like I can rework them into more cohesive readings that stand up to scrutiny.
Also, I've got more appreciation for the visual / audio aesthetics and shit, too. The sound and music's just great, as is standard for Lynch, really; and there are some really nice visuals, despite the DV's reputation for being a bit ugly and lifeless / artless (I will admit there are some moments - weirdly more toward the beginning of the film - where it veers too close to looking like amateur porn or something).
I thought since it's quite a divisive film, and cause I guess some of you have seen it and will have opinions and ideas about it that it could be quite cool to start a thread about it.
Who knows? Discussions here might be released in book form one day. WITH PAGES
