Please help!

I muted my computer the other day and now I can't turn the sound back on. I've right clicked on the mute icon a million times and it won't open up. I've also tried the soundy buttons on my laptop. Any other ideas? Is there another pathway to open the volume control?

I am on an american laptop (I think) It's a bit old and broken, my friend gave it to me.
