Let's deconstruct insults that we don't like
If only to make the pain of them less severe. "Try-hard", just used in the boards today. Reminds of the myth of 'effortless cool' that was popular when I was at school. I think calling a goody two shoes is okay because it usually implies an effort to brown-nose. But try hard can mean anything, even (apparently) undue effort to be funny... so basically you're describing a comedian. Daft insult.
