with sites needing to find alternative sources of income I was just wondering how well the subscription model is doing?

I currently subscribe to giantbomb, I used to sub to last.fm but due to lack of development I decided that the was little insentive to provide income other than the ad revenue. I can't imagine subscribing to many sites though, it'd get too expensive to maintain.
