If you have a smoke alarm that always goes off when you are cooking pop a shoe cover (http://www.alphaprotech.com/userfiles/images/cart/ProductImages/CPE_Shoe_Cover.jpg) on when you start and then take it off when you are finished (so you don't burn to death in the night).
