I asked a friend whether her friend identified as a man/woman and whether to be careful about the pronouns I use when I refer to her/him, because she's mentioned that her friend used to want to be a boy, but all I got was a weird look as if it was a sketchy question. Is that too intrusive a thing to ask/should it be something I only think about if people explicitly mention their preferred identification/lack thereof?
