Can anyone enlighten me?

Have the potential of moving to Lancaster next year for postgrad stuff. Realised that I've never been there and know NOTHING about it. If I do end up there, I'll be there for at least 4 years, so I'd like some idea of anything good there. Initial Googling is worrying, it looks about as culturally impotent as my home town.

Aside from its proximity to Manchester, is there anything good in Lancaster?
