Not sure where this is going, but sometimes I think people use 'OMG! DIY!' as an excuse for not really doing things properly. It's better than not doing anything at all, but a lot of deliberately DIY-looking stuff seems a bit self-congratulatory. Seems to happen in music and books and fanzines.
