cats and gerbils: can there be harmony?

Setting the scene:

my girlfriend and i are talking about moving in together.
she has a cat.
i want gerbils.

Will there be peace in our time? Or could this turn into a bloodbath?

(I'm only referring to the cat vs gerbils scenario, not whether she will start uppercutting me because i want to play video games at 1am ON A SCHOOLNIGHT)
