how should a company go about making redundancies?
can someone please let me know if there is an ettiquette here? reason:
my girlfriends company (small company about 75 people) deal in imports from europe so cos of the € v £ thing its all gone tits up. called in the auditors before xmas. everyone then had to take a 10% pay cut and were told there would be about 5 redundancies. luckily some people took voluntary so there was no need.
2 weeks ago the head of my gf's dept said everyone on the board was treating him strangely. on thursday he had a meeting, after which he went home and hasnt come back. noone told my gf's dept what had happened. the managing director (the only person above her boss) then sent them an email saying, "some big changes were about to happen this coming thursday". today someone in her dept had a meeting, came back, cleared his draw and left, saying he wasnt allowed to say why. then this afernoon about 10 more people were told "they might be made redundant", so they all went home.
hmm, long story, but basically, everyone in the company apart from the managing director is in the dark and it sounds like a bit of a shambles. please let me know if your redundancy stories are similar.
