Extracts from 'The A-Z of Non-Sexist Language'. part one

DanielKelly [Edit] [Delete] 12:05, 12 August '08

Language used by women to describe their bodies:

“There are few terms that are not or have not become insults. Katharine Viner reported in the Guardian (9 July 1992) on the scarcity of words available to women for describing their genitals. She writes “ Ask a man what he calls his penis and he will say his willy, prick, cock or Freddy. But ask a woman what she calls her genitals and she will reply with a coy ‘Well, um, I don’t call them anything’. The words that are available are in general unsatisfactory: fanny is too soft and euphemistic; vagina and vulva sound to clinical to many women…pussy, cunt, quim are derogatory terms.”
