Alight guys and girls

Me and my mate are going to the REM gig at Twickenham with a view to getting a hotel and going out after the gig, I was just wondering, I heard Twickenham is miles away from anything in London. Is this the case and if so where would you advise on staying? also is there anything decent happening on August 30th in the capital?
