I know, I was stunned last night reading the discarded paper to discover someone on the letters page had actually raised a cogent point on something.

Namely, national service as a a solution to youth disorder/knife crime.

So we're worried that kids are all killing each other. And the knee jerk reaction to stop this is to put them in the army to be trained as killers. Nice one.

Also I love all these people who are about 40, who didn't do national service themselves deciding it's the best solution. My great uncle did national service and got sent to Kenya. He was racially abused, blew up a cow, told 3 people of increasing rank to "Go and fuck themselves" and got court martialled, sent to military prison from which he then escaped but came back 6 months later because he couldn't find a job. Yep, instilling discipline all right!
