Best sporting achievement
I love sport. I will watch anything sporting related on TV. I love the competition, the winning faces, the dejected losers, the human endeavour. Sport is brilliant.
I'm stunningly average at loads of stuff and brilliant at nothing - but I've had my moments. Everyone must have one or two of THOSE moments, where for one glorious second what they've done in a sporting arena is FUCKING PERFECT. That awesome goalkeeping performance for the Second XI. That length-of-the-field try against your local rivals. That moment you beat the fastest kid in the school in the 100m.
What were they? Mine:
Football: Playing for school, we won a free-kick about 25 yards out. The ball was put down, and I was offered the chance to take it. And I did. I curled it into the top corner, off the crossbar and into the back of the net. 2-0. We won. What a fucking goal. I can picture the whole thing now. For one glorious second, I was Pele, Beckham and Gareth Ainsworth in one big fat bundle of schoolkid.
Athletics: I ran the final leg of the 4x100 Relay in the Inter-School Sports at Junior School, aged about 11. I received the baton in third place, and, running up the hill to the finish line I overtook the two kids in front of me and relegated the cocky shit from Linton Junior School into second. For 13 glorious second I was faster than the wind, Linford Christie and everyone on that field. Ace.
So, what's you best sporting moment? Indulge yourselves. Make yourselves smile at the memories. Life is brilliant, and so is sport.
