Acceptable Adverts
Is it just me, or has the debate over whether musicians should use their music, or their profile, to sell a product, completely disappeared?
I fucking hate adverts, but obviously I hate those who make them even more. Doesn't anybody still recoil a little bit when they hear one of their favourite songs advertising toilet spray, a car or any other wank they're trying to flog to us during the middle of the Simpsons (hey the only other thing on TV is Neighbours and thank god theres no fucking adverts). Look, its not my place to say what an artist should be doing with their music, but to sell a fucking Vauxhall? Can any amount of money or exposure make the artist feel ok with that? You can be pessimistic and say its an inevitability that comes with age, and maybe it is. But surely, some of those bands are making ENOUGH money. This isn't a polemic that preaches that everyone should only make enough to survive or anything...but there is a point where it crosses over into greed. And we all know it.
The fact that the Cure have sold their music to a car company, or that Frank Black sold Velouria to an internet company, can never EVER even slightly taint the amazing music that they have made in the past. However, my skepticism I think is warranted once they make that decision when it comes to looking at their future work. And I HATE THAT. I LOVE THE PIXIES and the Cure and so many other bands that have sold their music to commercials. But It annoys me. And its something I cant ignore.
What does everyone else think?
Oh, and on the subject of advertising....
If anyone works in marketing or advertising...KILL YOURSELVES. Its the only way to save your soul. Youre fucked and youre fucking us. KILL YOURSELVES.
-Sorry it had to be done.
