Variable Fees were introduced by the British Government in 1997, and first
charged in 2006/2007, and are currently capped at £3000 maximum. The
amount charged is decided by each institution depending on financial need.

In the next few years talks are beginning on the subject of removal of the
cap, meaning Universities nationwide can charge effectively what they want
to for your education.

This means that a University education will be available only to those who
can afford it, and the fundamental principles of education are marketised.
