Is brown sugar better than white sugar? How can sugars be different in good/badness?

Yet brown sugar's what my mum always bought as a loyal, Whole Earth, Holland & Barrett (sp?) ex-hippie. Why?

Is it just that brown bread >>> white bread, so everyone reckons brown sugar must be cooler? Is it just the fault of the Rolling Stones?
