does Windows XP run the same way as Windows 2000?

this sounds very simple, but to register with my uni's computer system, they've given me instructions for xp or a mac, but my laptop only uses Windows 2000 professional.

should I just install things anyway or should I get in touch with them an explain just how *old* my laptop is?
