This guy pretty much stopped WW3 from happening 20-odd years ago, yet the Soviet Union relieved him of his duties because his actions highlighted defects in his superiors. He got the credit he deserved a couple of years ago though, which is nice.

Shows how close we were to destruction though. Wonder how many other times something like this happened during the Cold War?
