festival highs and lows
Ok people, since we're all going festival mad at the moment, though I'd start a new thread.Let's hear your festival highs and lows. Here's mine.
Stonehenge 88.Highs-Culture Shock, just before the walk to the stones.Black cab pulling up next to me,crusty driving it,2 friends getting out of the back, handing me a bottle of Smirnov before wandering off.Losing a friend, following a trail of empty EKU28 bottles, finding him at the end of it,lying cuddling a bush, with a group of medieval peasants around him, playing mandolins and drinking opium tea, lol.I didn't sample any.
Lows.Losing all my friends during Culture Shock, having to walk to the stones, ripped to the tits on acid, with the only one of my friends I could find, who, several months earlier, during a moment of quiet reflection, had changed his name to Pestilence,Bringer of Joy.
Glastonbury 89.Highs-Camping with my mates for the duration, with 3 large motorbikes to play with.
Lows-Getting ran over and dragged under an ambulance.Missing Black Uhuru, instead seeing Womack and Womack and the Wonder Stuff,in a field with sunstroke.
T in the Park 95.Highs-Making our way through a maze of corridors,to find the drinks machine we'd spotted behind a locked glass door.Offering to pour drinks under door for money,to people who couldn't figure out how to get to it,which not a single other person did.
Lows-Taking too many exotic fungi to function properly, being approached by old friends from school, who immediately regretted it when they saw my eyes.Losing friend in dance tent during The Shamen, finding him some distance away, passed out under a parked car :-)
T in the Park 96.Highs-Dance tent,Dave Clarke, then Chemical Brothers then Leftfield.Seeing the Cocteau Twins.
Lows-Going to see Beck, after too many pints and pipes, realising half way through the set that I was watching The Jesus Lizard, wrong tent. That may be year before, not sure.Being attacked by chavs/neds on the way out.Seeing about 20 passers by threatening to kick the shit out of them was a heartwarming,life-affirming moment.
Essential Weekender,Finsbury Park,97.Highs-Seeing people like U-Roy,Jah Shaka, meeting lots of friends at it.
Lows-Drinking vodka all night on the bus down from Glasgow, carrying on drinking during the day, falling asleep standing up and falling into the person in front of me during Zion Train.Being absolutely dead on my feet during the Lee Scratch Perry set.
Essential Weekender,Brixton Academy,98.Highs-finding a fiver within a minute of arriving in Brixton, having a great time with friends all day, seeing some great sets from likes of Lee Scratch Perry.Going to my first booze free festival.
Lows-P.A/Equipment snarl up at beginning of Augustus Pablos set,set time up by time they got it sorted.Friend who we were meant to be staying with lying drunk and asleep, sleeping through over an hour of the phone ringing and door banging constantly :-)
Really looking forward to this years T in the Park. It'll be my first festival since going completely t-total,and think it'll be the best for that reason, should be able to make it to the correct tents, for once.
Looking forward to reading your tales of glory and woe :-)
