Sorry about this preoccupation with the internet, but here we go again:
In 50 years time:
People will pay for music through their subscription, an “entertainment” package allows you to pay a monthly fee allowing you to download a certain quantity of music/movies (price based on KB of information downloaded). This will allow people to download from their PDA/mobile phone, laptop or home computer which are all linked and covered by the same ISP. Mp3’s were considered antiquated by 2006, and technology now allows perfect sound quality to be downloaded instantly using a tiny amount of file space. Without the need for CD’s, bands no longer make albums, they write and release songs constantly, and people can by collections of their work complete with various types of merchandise (artwork, t-shirts, gig tickets etc) directly from the bands website. Bands take the majority of the money of goods they sell directly from their own websites, however most people choose to buy the music through large corporate subscription based services, which pay the bands royalties of about 5p per downloaded song. To get a listing on the top 20 recommended list of a big music download site is equivalent to getting on today’s radio 1 playlist, and only achieved by a minority of really crap corporate shite, much the same as today’s top 20 chart. Bands don’t get ‘signed’ to a label, they get plugged by a download site, the process is very similar, but successful ones are those that sell a lot of songs initially, enabling them to fund further releases, tours, promotions etc, raising their profile, and getting them listed on more and more download sites.
But this all ends when the nanobots take over the world and turn all music into David grey goo…
