OMFG!! Mew Last Night
Someone on DiS yesterday said that Mew had zero stage presence! Not sure who said it, but it has to be the most preposterous statement I have heard all year. Were you actually watching the band when you saw them?
The truth is Mew ROCKED! Every single person in attendance last night was spellbound. I looked around a couple of times and people were just stood mouths agape at what was being presented to them. I myself nearly cried, my hairs standing on end on numerous occasions.
Their musicianship was incredible and completely watertight. The drumming was soooo inventive and varied. The guitar was incredible and searing. The confidence these guys exuded shone through and blew away any doubts regarding ‘stage presence’.
The biggest attraction that Mew holds (for me anyway) is the vocal style of Jonas Bjerre. His falsetto vocal style is simply breathtaking. I must admit that I was worried about this not being replicated live satisfactorily. These doubts were soon dashed. I cannot explain enough how gobsmacked the 250 strong audience was. This is the first time in ages that I have been to a gig and NO ONE WAS TALKING.
I’ve been to a few memorable gigs this year. Pat Wolf, Arcade Fire (twice). But this (imho) wiped the floor with them.
If you get the chance, GO AND SEE THEM. You will not be disappointed.
Oh and the new Newcastle Academy seemed like a fantastic venue. The PA was simply amazing. One of the best I’ve heard in a while.
Browno, were you there? I looked out for you but didn’t see you.
They are also the support act for the coming Elbow tour (and I’ve got tickets yaaaaaay)
