Music for 10 year olds - advice request
Ok I'm visiting my niece and nephew next week and would like to get them some music as a present. They're 10 and 9 respectively. I've asked their parents and they aren't really into anything specific yet.
I don't want to be one of those old blokes who tries to impose their old bloke music tastes but on the other hand I think if I had been given some music when I was that age I would have really liked it.
Situation is a little unusual because they live on a boat so don't have the standard access to tv, internet (no smartphones or iPods either) etc so I don't think are really exposed to pop music in quite the way you'd expect but on the other hand they of course go to school, listen to the radio, see stuff online from time to time and so on.
Both their parents play music a lot (guitar and violin, folky stuff) and listen to mainly 60s,70s standards like The Beatles, Dylan, Simon&Garfunkel; plus quite a bit of classic country like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn. Their dad is also into 70s rock like Led Zeppelin. So I think that is the main music they'll have heard to date.
So I was just thinking of getting them a few cd's each, released this year and not really stuff that I like especially, as I think most of that would be a bit too niche, but acclaimed stuff that might appeal at that age.
I also want to avoid anything too obviously explicit in the lyrics or just very sexually explicit in content or image.
Initial ideas:
Taylor Swift
Lorde
First Aid Kit
She and Him
Warpaint
Ty Segall
Royal Blood
Hookworms
Jack White
So basically pop and rock.
Any general advice or specific album recommendations would be great
cheers everyone
