it's probably about a decade that I've been on DiS and let the internet start to have an influence on my music taste, and around say 2004-2006 there seemed to be a lot of stuff you'd call Indie Bands making Good Music (at least in a generally accepted, canon, year-end list kind of way). Stuff like;

The Shins, The Decemberists, New Pornographers, Wolf Parade, The Wrens, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, The Microphones, Animal Collective, Les Savy Fav, The Fiery Furnaces, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The National, Okkervil River, Spoon, My Morning Jacket, Silver Jews, The Hold-Steady, Sleater-Kinney, Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Interpol, The Dears, TV On The Radio, Grizzly Bear, Broken Social Scene, Beirut etc etc

and on the UK side of things:

Bloc Party, Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand, Clor, Long Blondes

I've named the big names, and it looks like a standard list of bands from a DiSer's profile in 2005, but you could double those names if I scraped the barrel a bit with the shiter side of things on both sides of the atlantic (Killers etc) - and same with if I went a bit more obscure (Constantines), and probably tons of stuff I'm forgetting

In hindsight some of the above is (a lot) better than others, some I never personally really liked, and whilst you could make an argument there's actually a broad-ish set of sounds and styles included in the above, it's all very identifiable as that kind of canon-accepted P4K Indie of the time.

Almost without exception (Spoon maybe?), pretty much every single one of the above is dormant/dead or just in decline (most, a massive decline). Which is fine and expected as loads probably have kids or whatever these days, and I'm relatively satisfied with the good runs and albums included from them.

But in their place - what's the equivalent? Are there any at all? Genuine question cos I'm so out of touch there could well be, but aoty threads on here/pitchfork/metacritic it seems like there's pretty slim pickings by way of what you'd broadly have called Indie 10 years ago. 2010 was probably the last year I can remember that had a lot in the way of that kind of thing
