Stockholm Peel Day
Hej People - it's me
I've been trying to organise a fitting event here in Stockholm for John Peel Day and depsite the annoyance of having had some artists say 'yes' only to have their booking agents' say 'no' (grrr clearchannelentertainment grrr) it looks like it should be a good night out.
I know most of you cant come but I thought you might like a head's up on some of the bands so here's a brief copy and paste of the press release and at the bottom there's a link for you to copy and paste into your browser that will let you explore the various websites and myspace pages of the artists - enjoy!
Each band will be playing 4 songs (ie a Peel Session) and I'll be encouraging everyone - artists and audience alike to sign a book of rememberance that we'll be sending to Sheila
Wish us luck and keep it Peel!
HAKAN LIDBO
A veteran of the music Industry, Hakan has released more than 70 records in the last 10 years from the cheesiest of pop to the most obscure experimental underground. Hakan was featured on John Peel’s show on the 8th of June 2004. It is an honor and a privilege to have him opening our evening’s event. Make sure you arrive early enough – he’ll be on stage at 6pm (come straight from work!)
LAST STATE
Female-fronted indie punk-pop from tonight’s newcomers performing only their second ever gig
LESLI
Impressively skilled singer/songwriter somewhere between Donovan and Jeff Buckley
DEBONAIR
Imagine elements of Interpol, Radiohead and Mars Volta fronted by two brothers and you're getting close to the intensity these boys produce on stage
STOMPIN' SOULS
Retro-rock on record, Stompin' Souls have a style and energy live that goes beyond the inevitable Hives comparisons and brings them far closer to Dinosaur jr. covering The Kinks
GIANTS OF DESIGN
This Stockholm 4-piece are either destined to be Sweden's biggest ever alternative rock export or to disappear without a trace - or both!
GOSTA BERLINGS SAGA
A band truly impossible to categorise - part prog-rock, part math-rock, part space-age bachelor pad grooviness - but way more than the sum of their parts. All instrumental, GBS will make you stare, make you smile AND make you dance
TORPEDO
With the drummer from The Je Ne Sais Quoi and two members of Tiger Lou, Torpedo are something of a super group already. As edgy as any of the current crop of London/New York punk-funkers but way more melodic - their trousers may not be as tight or their haircuts as asymetrical but these guys can REALLY play
PETER MURPHY'S CARVER COMBO
Another difficult band to categorise, twangy pulp-fiction guitars, alternative country melodies, a rockabilly rhythm section and gospel-like harmonies - all of this topped off with Peter Murphy's hugely impressive lead vocals that veer between The The's Matt Johnson and Morrissey
THE SUNSHINE
Rapidly gaining a following around the country on the strength of a Top Twenty single and some storming high-energy shows The Sunshine are destined for big things with the recent release of their debut LP 'Love'. A genuinely sunny and warm experience is given out in buckets by their west-coast tinged power-pop fronted by what I can only decribe as Scandanavia's very own Prince
DJs: PHIL HOPKIN & MORTY McCARTHY (Going Underground)
Phil and Morty, as members of seminal art-punk band Sultan's of Ping FC had the good grace to have met John Peel and been championed on his show on many occasions. They will be bringing you the finest selection of Peel related tunes both between bands and for a good two hours of dancing after the live musicians have cleared the stage to make way for the dancefloor
