there's plenty of critical failures that have become classics (i.e. VU & Nico, the Stooges, even Metal Machine Music to some extent), but I can think of very few that initially received critical hosannas only to be held to disdain. The closest I can think of is The Radio Heads' Hail to the Thief, but even that's not so much disdained as much as generally seen as just okay.
