The Weekly Sunday Listening Retrospective (don't call it a last.fm thread)
Good afternoon all. What have y'all been listening to?
It was my birthday yesterday so I went record shopping and have spent today enjoying my purchases.
First up, this rather delectable compilation of French Free Jazz from the 1970s. Art Ensemble Style moves with an afro-francophone touch. Still investigating but some of it is really really good, equal to and better than US and UK equivalents. For fans of Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Roscoe Mitchell, the more grounded Sun Ra (Lanquidity etc...) and that kinda vibe.

Saw Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura last night. They were ferocious. Wall of sound driving pysch rock with a little Japanese style wildness and a VHF/Vibracathedral Orchestra head of steam. Go see live. Lovely people as well, albeit extremely high (well they had just played Amsterdam)

Ghettoville by Actress getting lots of reps as I prepare to review it. It is a twisted piece of music in general. Think it's probably overlong but when it is great it is GREAT, generally when he keeps his palette minimal and simple.. for example, this codeine addled piece of 90s r & b

Barnett & Coloccia - Retrieval. Techno industrial abstraction on Blackest Ever Black. Really subtle and shifting dronework from some fairly heavy players in the US drone/avant metal scene. Like it a lot.

In the same vein also enjoying Kareem's Porto Ronco LP on The Death of Rave. Clanking, menacing drone with more than a hint of the Ben Frost's with the dynamics turned down.

Iueke has released another set of his lost techno tapes from the 90s on Antinote. Much more restrained than the previous one, but it's still resoundingly odd...
Finally Shackleton released his latest 12" and it's ridiculously good. He's going further into the heart of darkness and it's all the better for it. Incredible overlaid rhythms and organ style chiming synths that's utterly trance inducing. I played it 5 times without stopping for breath first time I got it.
