My parents go to see this old pub covers band quite regularly. Turns out they were in an incredible 'actual' band in the 70s!
My parents go and see this covers band called Cry Wolf in pubs near where they live. I've seen them a few times myself too.
They're a bunch of all guys playing covers mostly from the 70s/80s, and the odd contemporary song that old people think is 'rock music' like Nickelback or something. They have a suitably shit website too: http://www.crywolfrocks.co.uk/
Anyway, it turns out that three main guys (brothers as it turns out) were actually in a fairly successful glam-rock band in the 70s called Blackfoot Sue. Despite being aware of Cry Wolf for years, I wasn't aware of their history as a 'proper' band with a couple of LPs and a string of singles - and it turns out that they are/were pretty incredible!
Here they are playing their biggest hit, 'standing in the Road' on what seems to be some German version of Top of the Pops: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e6FDlS12qo
Here they are playing their follow-up single on a different TV show. The breakdown, solo, and fade-in from one minute on is incredible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbzpD_Ap9bs
Here's a kind Black Sabbath/Led Zep stomper with suitably psych lyrics called 'Messiah' from their debut album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lFSH_HkAQM
Basically, never underestimate the old rockers at the local pub - you never know who they might be!
