Why do some artists pretend to play 'electronic music'?
I quite liked that King Krule single from last year, so I looked to see if I could pre order the album. I went on Boomkat and was quite surprised to see the genre listed as 'electronic'. I know he uses samples and stuff, but it's pretty much 90% guitar. He tours with a band. I can't imagine anyone ever describing his music as electronic.
It could just be that website, but it reminded me of a trend, like when artists such as Editors, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand etc have 'gone electronic' for no apparent reason, and there are definitely other examples I can't think of off the top of my head.
I mean, King Krule also does ridiculous faux working class posturing, but I can understand how that adds a kind of credibility for some people. But does the vague description of 'electronic music' really have that kind of pull? Is there really still a mythology surrounding 'electronic music' for indie artists, or are there other reasons for having electronic aspirations?
