how neutral do you think you are when listening to a new album by a band you already like?
or going to a gig my a band you love.
i've been thinking about this because of the sudden godspeed love that has resurfaced. i absolutely love slow riot, a# and skinny fists and when i've seen them live in the past it has been absolutely magnificent but, even though i was ready for it to be totally brilliant last week, it was really quite poor, and it did leave me wondering if people can't help but be biased towards new records by bands they love. I haven't listened to the new GYBE yet, i think i feel a bit sour about it. did i just expect too much? am i making any sense?
joan of arc is another band that gets me. most of the time when i hear a new joa record i don't tend to like it but then i'll end up revisiting it a couple of months later and it will sort of snap into place. it happened for the gap, joa dick cheney, mark twain, eventually all at once and then again more recently for life like.
i think this is maybe why i tend to hardly ever buy new records on release date (or watch new films or buy new video games). sort of let the hype die down i suppose.
