Been making tunes on my laptop the last few years for the fun of it never really wanted to play live until recently. Where do I start? what should I get that works well with other hardware?

At the moment I am making a wishlist that includes APC40 but I think that my current soundcard might not be up to scratch. Roland sampler which might be an idea seeing as it is all hardware.
