EXPERIMENTAL INSTRUMENT BUIILDING WORKSHOP - LIVERPOOL APRIL 2ND 2012
Ex-Easter Island Head present two instrument building workshops by Dutch experimental instrument maker YURI LANDMAN (www.hypercustom.com)
The two workshops are for the Home Swinger & Triochord instruments:
The HOME SWINGER (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Swinger) is a 12-string electric zither with a moveable bridge that allows for the production of beautiful chiming overtones and harmonics impossible to recreate on normal stringed instruments.
Employing a simple moving rod as a 3rd bridge, the Home swinger utilises a microtonal scale based on fractions of a divided string and reciprocal resonance to produce an otherworldly, utterly unique sound that has been likened to that of a gamelan ensemble, chiming clocks, bells, and massed harps and harpsichords.
The workshop instrument is a simplified version of the Moodswinger - an instrument built for the band LIARS and used on their Sisterworld album. Dustin Wong, The Go! Team, The Luyas, Veils and Wu Fei also own and perform on the instrument.
The TRIOCHORD (Pictured top left) is a three string electric monochord (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochord) combined with a more sophisticated version of the diddley bow (The instrument we can see Jack White playing in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZNk76_4lds).
Like the Homeswinger, it is played as a tabletop instrument and incorporates a microtonal scale able to produce notes outside of the normal range of the guitar. When the three strings are tuned in unison it generates a beautiful natural chorus effect. It can also incorporate a third bridge to reproduce the chiming overtones of the Homeswinger, or be played with a slide in the manner of a slide guitar or lapsteel.
For the workshop you choose one instrument: The Home Swinger costs £110 and the Triochord costs £30
Yuri provides all materials pre-cut and drilled, and handles soldering and wiring the pickups. Over the course of 4 hours you build your instrument alongside Yuri and then take it home to make glorious music with for all eternity.
You register for the workshop by emailing Yuri at this address - drowningman(at)casema.nl - and stating which instrument you would like to make. Please CC Exeasterislandembassy@gmail.com into your email so I can get in touch with you and arrange whether you are coming to the daytime or evening session.
Workshops will be 15:00 - 18:00 / 19:00 - 23:00 @ Leaf Tea Shop & Bar (Upstairs) Bold Street
NOTE: THERE IS A DEADLINE OF MARCH 8TH FOR REGISTERING FOR THE WORKSHOP. If you want to build an instrument you MUST email Yuri by then or he won't be able to source the parts for your instrument!
Prices are per instrument rather than per participant, so feel free to split the cost of one between you and your friends/romantic partners/bandmates - Yuri will give you the details for paypalling him the money when you email him.
More info about the instruments, workshops and Yuri's work can be found in this brochure:
