Kayo Dot - Gamma Knife
Way more rockin' than I expected, but then I never know what to expect with this band. The first track is fucking beautiful as usual, then it goes pretty crazy for the last 25 minutes. Which is kind of my problem, KD's albums just keep getting shorter...
Anyway this is probably the most intense thing I've heard from Toby Driver in a while, almost veering into grindcore/blackened territory, it is, of course, pretty bizarre and totally brilliant.
However, it was recorded live in an actual venue in front of an audience... it just doesn't sound that good. Maybe they were going for a kind of muddy confusional kind of atmosphere, though I'm guessing lack of funds contributed to the decision to record it this way...
I like it. It's just that my favourite albums that Toby Driver has written (Choirs Of The Eye and Part The Second) had a long period of gestation and contain plenty of layers that reward repeated listens, proper 'studio' albums. The discs that were recorded with a specific lineups in mind kind of lack this.
Anyway it's free to stream and a tiny $5 to download so i'd reccomend this to anyone. And if you like it then buy everything else KD have ever done. Seriously these guys must be poor as hell
