Where to start with proper drone?

Now I know I've kind of threadjacked the Belong Common Era topic but I just don't know anything about this genre.

I do of course, love a bit of gaze - A Place To Bury Strangers, Tamaryn, Screen Vinyl Image, Weekend but I just don't see the appeal of something without a rhythm section.
