Dutch producer Krampfhaft is one of those people whose work stood out from the pile on the first listen; his laser addled Makin’ Magic EP for the Rwina label ringing out from the speakers with aplomb. Kind of like Kuedo, Krampfhaft applies the tenacity of footwork’s speedy percussion to what he does, but it’s not the focus of his production style. Its influence is there in the little flurries and in the intensity of the low end but his work sits very comfortably with the hyper energy of his surrounding label roster (Eprom, NastyNasty, Desto and Doshy) in that its colourful and brash – his balled up synths spray like rapid fire neon shrapnel on EP opener ‘I Needed You.’

‘Hyper Dreaming’ is the EP’s roller; a serene float before the balls to wall drum introduction to the proper juke nod of, ‘Carl Sagan The Man;’ which is quick, frenzied and splattered with paint daubs, popping like bursts of Skittles’ prime colourations. ‘Makin’ Magic’ is the uplifting EP highlight though, a perfectly weighted balance of reverbed snares, skittish hi hats and synthesized lushness. Whilst touching on a lot of styles it, much like the EP as a whole, deftly carves itself its own personality amongst the other material, albeit one that can flip from outwardly blissed to overly vexed in swift 4 minute bursts.

Having returned from China, where he was recording with Ten Thousand Yen artist Presk, Krampfhaft has been welcomed by a busy schedule of shows. We caught up with him after his recent jaunt to the UK to bookmark his contribution to our ongoing mix series, SR Mix #105…
