Songs with lyrics about ordinary life, daily pleasures, tiny triumphs, etc
I was just listening to `A thing well made` by The Muttonbirds, an utterly great song (http://grooveshark.com/#/s/A+Thing+Well+Made/2w5pom?src=5), which starts:
``She's wearing her don't talk to me face
As she makes the kids' lunches
I oblige and quietly shut the front door as I leave
Drive into town before the fog lifts
I sell sporting goods
I've got a shop not far from Cathedral Square
I like to open up early
So fellows can come in on their way to work
Daydream around the rods and reels
While their breakfast's still warm inside them
Go on have yourselves a look
I'm proud of my shop
Almost everything's from overseas
You won't find a better selection...``
My favourite Okkervil River song is probably `The President's Dead` (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQaBxJiAjPE - ignore the unofficial video, just listen):
``Let's imagine the way, let's say 30 years in,
How somebody will say, `What you were doing when...?`
On a beautiful day, I was waking up and
I was lying in bed, with my girlfriend
And the eggs on the plate, and the bacon hissin'
And the coffee was great, there was spring on the wind.
If you don't live through a day for the littlest things,
And the littlest ways made you feel you were blessed
If you died right then, well you know you'd be missed,
But there's no better state to cease to exist
And you wouldn't feel sad, and you wouldn't resist
Cause you knew what you had, and were thankful for it
In my own little way, I'm a small quiet man
I've got no wars to win, I don't have a big plan
But I love my new place, and I love my old friends
And I scrimp and save, and one day I'll have kids...``
Both the songs above happen to set the mundane against the shocking (the former obliquely, the latter directly), but that's not necessary for this thread. What songs do you like that feature nice little depictions of daily life?
