Do you really need a computer to record and make your own music? (Anti-software-centric)

Like, REALLY? I'm sure they didn't have ProTools in the '50s. So I ask, how would I go about recording and making my own music in my home WITHOUT software? The software bit is the bit that scares me as it seems too complicated. Advice, knowledge, all welcome wanted.
