An unbelievabley rare set from The Thing (Gustafsson, Nilsseen-Love, Flaten), Islington Mill, Manc, 1st Dec
I'm pretty much quaking in my boots at this show. I don't think the Thing have ever played outside London in England and I'm just plain old honoured to be putting on this show.
The Thing are a legendary and explosive improv trio with Mats Gustafsson (alto, tenor, baritone and slide saxophone / live electronics), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass and live electronics) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums).
Influenced by different traditions of free music derived from Germany, England and America, these may not be immediately obvious to some listeners due to their truely unique sound.
Mats Gustafsson is one of Europe's biggest names on the free music scene. An absolute legend. He's played with Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth and more recently as one of the hardest blowing saxophonists on the Ex with Brass Unbound tour. He has established himself as an intensely powerful saxophonist, and has somewhat reinvented the way of playing the instrument.
Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love have become known as Norway`s heaviest rhythm-section. Since they`re long time collaboration started in 1992, they have been working in several groups, amongst them School Days with Ken Vandermark, Scorch trio with Raoul Björkenheim, and the Swedish/Norwegian jazz-group Atomic.
I urge you to have a listen to this album, http://open.spotify.com/album/0ILp1qRz8PtECyH4CKv6CD , that first track is wow.
The rarity og this show can't be understated enough and I doubt they'll ever be back up here. Doors are at 7.30pm at the Mill. Tickets are £12 from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/95442.
Support will be from Uboat, a duo with Pascal Nichols (Part Wild Horses..) and from a trio of David Birchall: guitar
Richard Harrison: percussion/dishwasher
Richard Scott: electronics
