What Big Beat (or Big Beat-esque-era dancey stuff) has stood the test of time?
I've been revisiting a bit of this stuff recently and have been drawing my own conclusions, which are below. I remember them saying at the time it was fake dance music for drunk indie loving students, of which in fairness I was one, but I reckon some of it is still good, man. PS the parentheses above are to avoid loads of anal "that wasn't big beat that was break beat" etc cobblers. Although I exclude completely Leftfield, Underworld, Prodigy, Fluke, DIV as they definitely weren't, although I love them.
Stuff that I thought was great at the time and still is:
Fatboy Slim - Better Living Through Chemistry (everything else no)
Chemical Brothers - first two albums
Freestylers - We Rock Hard
Propellerheads
Lionrock - everything is ace
Some Req stuff
Stuff I thought that was great at the time and isn't really at all:
Deejay Punk-Roc
Bentley Rhythm Ace
Wiseguys
Stuff I didn't like much then but has held up well now:
Lo-Fidelity Allstars - first album
Stuff I never really liked:
Monkey Mafia
Freq Nasty
Anything else not mentioned above I guess
Best single album:
The free NME Fatboy Slim mixtape OR the Chemical Beats compilation. Those rocked.
